We want the Parliamentary Debate on Cheaper Petrol and Diesel - @FairFuelUK

Dear Member of Parliament, (Steven Baker)

I am a supporter of the FairFuelUK campaign. I understand that FairFuelUK worked with Robert Halfon MP to raise 100,000 signatures on the Government’s new ePetition site. They achieved this target on the 30th September 2011. I believe this is further evidence of the immense importance of this subject to ALL our lives. Families and businesses are reeling under the adverse effects of high petrol & diesel prices. Fuel duty accounts for the ‘lions share’ of the price of every litre of road fuel purchased.

I am very concerned and somewhat shocked that there appears now to be an issue about whether Parliamentary time will be found for this debate. I understand that the Back Bench Business Committee is saying that there is not enough time, but the Government are saying there is!

As my MP, please could I respectfully request that you make representations on my behalf to the Prime Minister, the Leader of the House, the Chair of the Back Bench Business Committee and any other involved authority to take steps to ensure that FairFuelUK debate does indeed take place? It is what I believed was going to happen following the Government’s ePetition hitting 100,000 signatures. It is so vital to the economy and me you support this campaign and the debate in Parliament. 

There’s another issue that high fuel costs has caused, which is that we can’t afford to travel from county to county to visit our elderly relatives regularly. In these times many family units have dispersed, often needing to go where they can find work. This leaves elderly family members isolated and in less frequent contact than is ideal.

It’s not just businesses and the family shopping budget that is under strain, it’s now the fabric of the family unit.
