Microsoft Live Messenger and [partial] XMPP support

Microsoft fan boy: It's great! Live Messenger now supports XMPP so we can connect to the Live chat network using XMPP software (well, if it supports OAuth)
XMPP fan boy: Why would you want to connect to the Live chat network with an XMPP app?
Microsoft fan boy: To chat to my MSN/Live buddies
XMPP fan boy: You can do that anyway, with your Live Messenger chat programs
Microsoft fan boy: Oh.
XMPP fan boy: So can I send buddy requests and chat messages from my XMPP address on my domain to you at your Live/Hotmail chat address?
Microsoft fan boy: err, I don't think so
XMPP fan boy: So what's the point then?
Microsoft fan boy: what do you mean?
XMPP fan boy: Many people are missing the point with Microsoft Live Messenger and XMPP support. The whole point of XMPP is that we don't have to connect to anyone else's (Microsofts) network to chat to each other, just like we don't have to to send email.
Microsoft fan boy: So what's the point of Microsoft's support for XMPP?
XMPP fan boy: I've no idea, seems pointless to me unless they federate (open up) their network so that it becomes part of the wider XMPP/Jabber community.
Microsoft fan boy: I suppose I could build my own XMPP app to connect to Live now
